Once a fixture in the American home, pianos are easy to find for cheap these days and those who own them are having trouble finding people take them off their hands.

A trend of unwanted pianos has been felt across the nation for years, according to news reports.

The National Association of Music Merchants reports merchandisers sold 364,500 pianos in 1909, but it’s been a steady slide since, picking up speed in the 21st century.

The National Association of Music Merchants reports merchandisers sold 364,500 pianos in 1909, but it’s been a steady slide since, picking up speed in the 21st century.

"Yamaha sold fewer acoustic pianos as years went by because customers were instead buying electric pianos. The digitization of music over the decades, as well as the increase in activities available to young people, has pulled attention away from the acoustic piano and the music for which it was designed", one said.

A Silent Piano is essentially still an acoustic piano, enpowered with the choice of muting the sounds that are produced when the hammer strikes the strings. Consequently, its main selling point would be that it offers the player a chance to have private silent practice, even in the wee hours like 2am.

Americans are still making music, just not as much on traditional pianos.

"As the technology for electronic instruments and keyboards has improved people have switched, because you don't have to tune an electronic keyboard. You can carry it with you, it's lightweight. It can make any sound you want."

The economic difficulties of piano dealers reflect the larger issues that faced America’s piano manufacturers. Like the U.S. auto industry, it was hit hard by imports from Asia, as well as by the growing popularity of electronic keyboards.

There were 160 piano makers in the U.S. a century ago. There are only four major producers today. Manufacturing has shifted largely to China, Korea and Japan.

The piano has been the staple of family homes for generations, but cultural shifts and the recession have seen sales plunge in the United States.

The owners of many piano stores are under pressure as the traditional acoustic piano falls out of favour. Children have been distracted by smart phones and iPads and sport.

Why learn the piano when you can make a phone sound like an instrument at the touch of a finger?

The GPX-F1 Facet Grand Piano won the Grand Prize in the Roland Digital Piano Design Awards back in 2015. This competition challenged product designers around the world to come up with a ground-breaking brand new digital piano concept. There were over international 120 entries, and the winning design was the creation of American Jong Chan Kim.

In 2019 Roland decided to turn Kim’s ideas into an actual working instrument. The company assembled a small design team at their headquarters in Hamamatsu, Japan. Using Roland’s latest PureAcoustic modelling software and their Acoustic Projection System a fully functioning GPX-F1 Facet Grand Piano was constructed. And it was unveiled to the world at this week’s CES (2020) exhibition in Las Vegas.
