At the end of the 1800s and start of the 1900s, the production of pianos took off as demand for the instruments increased in well-to-do homes.

But the pianos made during that era are now, 100 years on, collectively reaching extinction.

While some pianos can be restored, others are beyond repair and so are being dumped, abandoned, neglected, smashed - even burnt.

Once a fixture in the American home, pianos are easy to find for cheap these days and those who own them are having trouble finding people take them off their hands.

A trend of unwanted pianos has been felt across the nation for years, according to news reports.

The National Association of Music Merchants reports merchandisers sold 364,500 pianos in 1909, but it’s been a steady slide since, picking up speed in the 21st century.

A trend of unwanted pianos has been felt across the nation for years, according to news reports.

The National Association of Music Merchants reports merchandisers sold 364,500 pianos in 1909, but it’s been a steady slide since, picking up speed in the 21st century.

"Yamaha sold fewer acoustic pianos as years went by because customers were instead buying electric pianos. The digitization of music over the decades, as well as the increase in activities available to young people, has pulled attention away from the acoustic piano and the music for which it was designed", one said.

The piano, once the pride of many American living rooms, seems out of tune with a growing number of households. People who own old uprights, especially the oak and walnut ones, often have the same problem as those with homes full of traditional brown furniture: When you need to get it out of your house, you can’t sell it or even give it away.

"I know it’s super-duper expensive to move a piano. What immediately went through my mind were visual images of how this piano might have been used. Maybe a family once sat around it or a kid took lessons on it? Why was it discarded? Pianos bring people together, they are part of celebrations. It kind of made me sad to see it out there in the alley"
