Curators from the Louisiana State Museum raised $35,000 to have it reassembled and restored.

Despite the painstaking restoration, the white grand piano is unplayable. It is this last fact that makes the story of this instrument such a powerful metaphor for New Orleans since Katrina.

It is a myth that only serious musicians needs to have their pianos voiced. In reality, all pianos need to be voiced periodically, even those used by novice pianists. When a pianist is just starting to learn to play, it is important that a properly-voiced instrument is used so that she is able to discern between notes based purely on her playing. This reduces the number of variables that she has to handle in her learning journey.

By the late 19th century, designers were still tinkering with piano design.

The Hungarian musician Paul von Jankó introduced what came to be called the Jankó keyboard, which was shorter across but had several horizontal rows of keys like stripes across the instrument.

The next question, then, is when does a piano stop being a piano?

These days a phone can be a camera and a publishing system and a map and a diary and a recording device. And yet we still call it a phone. Even when it's a metronome. Even, yes, when it's a piano.

Despite the scourge of poaching, piano maker Bechstein has used ivory on a golden salon grand commissioned for its 160th anniversary and based on a replica of the original gilded piano Carl Bechstein created for Queen Victoria in the late 19th century. It took a team of 90 workers more than 2,500 hours to recreate the elaborate instrument. It is finished with 24-carat gold leaf, carved from century-old Italian wood and finished with - legally sourced - ivory keys.

Once you learn to ride a bike, the ability to do so recedes to levels below conscious awareness.

But memory is imperfect. One main reason performers can suddenly and unexpectedly forget a piece of a music is because of memory retrieval. One thing that causes retrieval problems is stress or performance anxiety or the pressure we put on ourselves.

We might also become de-conditioned, even though we know we should exercise more to maintain strength and fluidity.

All of these issues contribute to reaching maximum exposure.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Everyone! Here's our version of "Angels We Have Heard on High," with a few other Christmas favorites mixed in. Can you name them all?

We wrote and performed this in the same style of our music video "What Makes You Beautiful". ALL the sounds you hear were created by different parts of the piano (except the vocals of course).

We wanted this to be a fun music video full of "Christmas Spirit." While the video primarily presents the "fun" side of Christmas (complete with cameo appearances by Christmas icons which "helped" us film), we wanted the music to portray what, to us, is the true meaning of the Holiday season. As we wrote it we imagined the "shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night." And how the Angel appeared to them, announcing the humble birth of the Savior of the World. How incredible it would have been when, "suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!" (Holy Bible, Luke Chapter 2)

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We love you!
