Arthur Rubinstein Virtual PianoFest kicks off

The Rubinstein Competition and the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music (BMSM) at Tel Aviv University have partnered up to created the Arthur Rubinstein Virtual PianoFest, which will run from 5-21 May.

The Rubinstein Competition and the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music (BMSM) at Tel Aviv University have partnered up to created the Arthur Rubinstein Virtual PianoFest, which will run from 5-21 May.

The festival includes a wide variety of events, encompassing famous laureates of the Rubinstein Competition, rising pianists on the Israeli and international scene, and leading pedagogues and composers.

The events broadly fall into three areas - livestreamed recitals, broadcasts of classic archive performances from the competition's past years, and supporting discussion-based events. All events take place at 6pm Israel time / 5pm Central European Time / 4pm British Summer Time / 11am Eastern Daylight Time.

In the past week alone, I’ve been able to watch older performances I missed; ones I had hoped to travel for this spring; ones that would otherwise seem unfathomable, like the pianist Maria João Pires coming out of retirement. If anything, I’m taking in more music than before; the only difference is that now I can be in multiple places — or at least multiple browser tabs — at once.

The organization said the concerts are designed to bring live music into homes during a time of social distancing.

The Quarantine Concerts will feature local musicians and give the community a chance to donate to support the artists.
