The Beatles used a piano called the Mrs. Mills piano that had that tinny sound.

I've had this small upright piano for a while and I've always wanted to add a pedal to give it that similar ragtime/honky tonk/tack piano sound.

In the biz, it's called a "mandolin rail" and it's a pretty simple modification that gives a really unique sound to the instrument.

This pedal modification allows you to get the honky tonk sound on the fly.

Trevor Woodison is touring South West pubs trying to find which of them still has a playable piano.

He then offers to tune the instrument and for a small fee provide an evening's entertainment.

So far he has catalogued more than 80 neglected pianos in his mission to bring back the traditional knees up.

Syntonic Comma is a small comma type interval between two musical notes, equal to the frequency ratio 81:80 (= 1.0125) (around 21.51 cents).

Two notes that differ by this interval would sound different from each other even to untrained ears, but would be close enough that they would be more likely interpreted as out-of-tune versions of the same note than as different notes.

The comma is also referred to as a Didymean comma because it is the amount by which Didymus corrected the Pythagorean major third (81:64, around 407.82 cents) to a just major third (5:4, around 386.31 cents).

Someone commented: "My music teacher in school taught me, Eastern music has quarter tones and third tones. When I recently looked up closer what just intonation of keys means, I found the syntonic comma. The syntonic comma is about a ninth tone. There is half, quarter, third and ninth, but no eighth note I'm aware of."

A quarter tone is a pitch halfway between the usual notes of a chromatic scale or an interval about half as wide (aurally, or logarithmically) as a semitone, which itself is half a whole tone.

Quarter tones divide the octave by 50 cents each, and have 24 different pitches.

Obi keys/synth engine reprogrammed for 24-tone music.

One of the greatest strengths of synthesis over acoustic is the ability to program alternate tuning systems - any you can imagine.

Not all hardware synths can do this, though. It is the preserve of only a few - and one of the strengths of DSI instruments and the OB6 i.e. creating and installing your own tuning system on the synth.

It is a myth that only serious musicians needs to have their pianos voiced. In reality, all pianos need to be voiced periodically, even those used by novice pianists. When a pianist is just starting to learn to play, it is important that a properly-voiced instrument is used so that she is able to discern between notes based purely on her playing. This reduces the number of variables that she has to handle in her learning journey.

This is really great sharing!! I enjoyed the documentary so much! Hope they don't really take it off after 29 May 2017! That would be a pity.
