Limelight 2019, Temasek Junior College Symphonic Band
14 May 2019
7:30pm
Esplanade Concert Hall

The Temasek Junior College (TJC) Symphonic Band was established in 1977 for students to express their interest and love for music. As a band with a rich tradition and dedicated alumni, it maintains a high standard of excellence, driven by the commitment, dedication and sheer passion of its students and resident conductor, Mr. Alex Lin. The band bagged its 14th Gold Award in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) (2007), along with the coveted Gold with Honours Award (2005). Excellent results were maintained at the SYF Arts Presentation from 2013 to 2017, where the band was awarded the highest accolade of Certificate of Distinction.

The band has also done consistently well in both local and regional competitions. In 2014, they were awarded the 2nd runner-up in the Open Division of the Singapore International Band Festival (SIBF).  In 2012, the band clinched the Gold award in the First Division of SIBF and also finished in the top three in that category.

While the band actively pursues musical excellence, it also does its part in contributing to the community, regularly participating in community service events such as Fun For All Under The Stars held at the Singapore Turf Club, performances at the Changi Naval Base Open House, and volunteering at the Willing Hearts soup kitchen and Bright Vision Hospital.

Since 2013, the band has expanded in membership with more than sixty students from the Integrated Programme (IP) Year 1 to 4, led by conductor Mr. Tan Yao Cong, an alumni of the TJC Symphonic Band. The IP Band, together with the JC Band, has consistently staged sold-out concerts at venues such as Victoria Concert Hall and Singapore Conference Hall. In 2017, the IP Band took part in its first Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation and attained the Certificate of Distinction.

This concert will be a culmination of the IP and JC band’s musical endeavours and achievements, as well as years of musical excellence and patient guidance under the baton of their beloved conductors, Mr. Alex Lin, who has been with the band since 1981, and Mr. Tan.

The band will perform works by renowned wind band composers such as Prima Luce (First Light) by prolific Belgium composer Jan Van der Roost, as well as Pompeii by Satoshi Yagisawa. Tunes from famous musicals such as Les Miserables will also be featured in the band’s second showing at the Limelight Series.
