Kris Foundation kicks off its 2016 season with a celebration of the viola, in collaboration with the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO)!

This May, join violist Jeremy Chiew and pianist Lim Yan in a concert featuring the viola repertoire. In celebration of the start of Kris Foundation's 2016 concert season, our performers will explore viola works that freshen, reminisce and inspire. This concert will also feature Daniel Ong, viola principal from the SNYO.

Programme highlights include the viola sonatas by Vieuxtemps (Op. 36) and Hindemith (Op. 11 No. 4).

Violist Jeremy Chiew graduated with a Masters in Viola Performance from the Longy School of Music of Bard College, under the tutelage of Dimitri Murrath. A recipient of the Patricia Sherman Award, his recent appearances include solo concertos with The Chamber Players and ESO, and have performed in concerts by the Macao Orchestra, New England Repertory Orchestra and Boston Civic Symphony as a freelance violist. On home ground he appears with ensembles such as The Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO), Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO), and re:mix.

No stranger to the local Classical music scene, 2006 Young Artist Award recipient Lim Yan's work has taken him all over Europe and Asia, including performances at the Cheltenham Festival, the Beijing International Piano Festival and the Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Back home, he has performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Music Makers. He was also the soloist for the visit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in April 2009. Yan has been on the faculty at the School of the Arts since its inception in 2008. He also teaches at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts as well as the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

Daniel Ong attained a distinction in the ABRSM Grade 8 at the age of 11, and in subsequent years achieved the ATCL and LTCL Diploma from Trinity College. He joined the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) at the age of 14 and began learning the viola under Dr. Tan Wee-Hsin. The following year, he was selected to be part of the SNYO string quartet and performed as a quartet on multiple occasions. They also participated in master-classes by Natalie Clein and Jan Vogler. Last year, the quartet was given the opportunity to attend a week-long summer camp organized by the Seiji Ozawa International Academy in Rolle, Switzerland where they were coached on both quartet and solo playing by eminent musicians such as Pamela Frank, Sadao Harada and Nobuko Imai. Daniel currently studies at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and leads the viola section in the SNYO.
