Pianist Wong Chiyan makes his SSO debut in the technically demanding Second Piano Concerto, an early work completed when Prokofiev was still a student at the St Petersburg Conservatory. A contemporary critic foresaw greatness for its composer, though, he wrote, the work “left listeners frozen with fright, hair standing on end”. Principal Guest Conductor Okko Kamu closes the concert with Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, a work which breaks away from the formal traditions of the classical era.
