Performers of works from the Western musical canon are continually refining, and at times profoundly transforming, their interpretations. In this presentation, Stephen Emmerson outlines the development of his interpretive approach to Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in F major, Op. 10 No. 2 showing how an analytical view of the score, together with historical evidence, can inform and encourage an approach to its performance more playful and creative than that usually adopted.
