Music China is Asia’s main musical instrument trade fair. The exhibition took place last month (October) and attracted around 2,400 exhibitors from 34 countries, and more than 120,000 visitors from 80 different countries.

Two of the more impressive instruments on display were from Fazioli and Bechstein.

Russian pianist Yevgeny Sudbin has become a familiar figure with Singapore audiences over the years, with appearances at the Singapore International Piano Festival and Singapore Symphony Orchestra concerts.

Recently, Morley College in London was planning to put on an event celebrating International Women's Day when it unintentionally caused a public relations uproar. The college had produced a poster featuring a male pianist and no women performing on what was supposed to be a day celebrating women. Female activitists immediately took issue to this.

For the past 19 years, the University of California San Diego Library has held a Toy Piano Festival. It was established to celebrate this unique musical instrument and to pay homage to American composer John Cage.

The instrument’s popularity is down to one man – Albert Schoenhut. He came from a German toy-making family and in 1872 established the Schoenhut Piano Company in America. It is still the world’s leading toy piano manufacturer.
