Praised for his emotional energy and technical finesse, Oliver Salonga has performed in the concert halls of the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, and China.

Born in Manila, Salonga, a child prodigy, gained national recognition and have done national concert tours after he won First Prize in National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 1998 and in 2001.

Visiting Professor Karst De Jong from the Koninklijk Conservatorium - Royal Conservatoire in his 4-month residency at YST presented his artistry through the perspective of musical improvisation.

In the early part of the Telling Stories season, Karst presented a piano recital based on various compositional styles. This concept was expanded upon through weekly improvisation workshops which were open to the general public, culminating in a performance filled with diverse soundscapes and boundless imagination.

Many people find such events intimidating, boring, or too expensive. But the Bukit Panjang Primary School pupil, who described the guitar performance at Victoria Concert Hall as a "memorable experience", did not have to pay a cent for it - thanks to a new programme by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), which aims to make its shows more accessible. (Standard tickets at that particular show, the President's Young Performers concert, had ranged from $15 to $48.)

More than 8,000 young people have benefited from the Young Symphony Explorers programme since its soft launch last year.
